General Tso's Tofu | Easy Recipes Lunch

General Tso's Tofu  is the perfect balance of spicy, sweet, and savory. It is loaded with protein (20+ grams per serving!) and you can make it in under 60 minutes!

Cook Time: 50 mins

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 (14 ounce) package extra firm tofu drained, pressed, and cubed
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup Herb & Garlic Dip Mix
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic chili sauce

DIRECTIONS

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Sieve cornstarch over the tofu and roll lightly to coat
  • Lay out the tofu on an oiled pan.
  • Bake for approximately 30-40 minutes turning the tofu to cook well on both sides.
  • Mix together Herb & Garlic Dip Mix, garlic chilli sauce, sesame oil and bring to boil in a small pot.
  • Mix tofu with sauce and serve with brown rice

General tso’s tofuis a popular take-out dish in china. It’s a quick dish that you can make for only half an hour. This is just the perfect entree especially if you have a craving for a takeout but you do not want to leave your house. This dish can be easily found at the restaurant but you can make it at home to save on calories and some cash.

The traditional version was made with chicken, precisely a deep fried chicken. It was lightly battered and mixed with a sweet-savoury sauce. Additionally, it was cooked with green onions and red chilly. If you decide to make your tofu, here are some tips that will make your tofu to crave for every time. First dry the tofu and bake it under high temperatures to give it a brown color and a tougher texture then set it aside to let it dry further. Tofu should have a meaty texture.

You can also stir-fry it in sauce to make it more tasty and more delicious. If you however want an oil free tofu, you can bake tofu until brown but be a little more cautious to avoid burning it. The traditional general ts’o chicken was not all that healthy and that is why we have decided to make it more healthy by replacing it with tofu.

Tofu is decidedly a healthier option to chicken thighs. However if you don’t like tofu, you can replace it with cauliflower, which is also a healthier option. This is a vegan dish and its very tasty as opposed to many vegan and vegeterian dishes. It is also a comfort food because it does not require lots of ingredients which are unattainable. Most of these ingredients are easily available in grocery shops.

This is a great meal that can easily change the minds of your vegan-hating friends and family. It is very high in protein and also light. Unlike the tofu prepared in the restaurants, that are very heavy with a a high number of calories, this general tso’s takeout dish is light and eventually very low on calories. With this dish, you do not have deprive your vegan and vegeterian friends of a good time in your dinner party. So why don’t you give your taste buds a different and more exciting experience and don’t forget your friends too. You will absolutely love it.
